Lithium-ion batteries: the kind inside your MacBook, Dell, or iPhone have a limited lifespan measured in cycles. One cycle is defined as using 100% of the battery's capacity (whether all at once or over several days).

  • Scenario A (Unplugged): You unplug your laptop, drain it to 0%, and charge it back to 100%. You just used 1 cycle.
  • Scenario B (Plugged In): You keep your laptop plugged in while you work. The battery sits idle. You use 0 cycles.

Every time you force your battery to discharge and recharge, you are chemically aging the internal components but by keeping it plugged in, you are effectively "pausing" this aging process.
